As mornings get crisper, the days get shorter, and autumn colors start to appear, we know that winter is on it’s way! Unfortunately, that signals the end of the outdoor pool season. As you’re preparing to winterize your pool and close it up for your season, here are a few of the important pool accessories you’ll need:

1. Winter pillow(s)

While winter air pillows aren’t on most pool owners must-have list, we think they should be! We generally recommend them to all above ground pool owners. The pillow holds the cover slightly off the surface of the water, which helps exert pressure inward on to the pillow, rather than on the liner or the wall if the water starts to freeze. It also helps with even weight distribution.

3. Winterizing chemical kit

A few days before closing your pool for the season, you should test your water. Water that is at the proper levels will help you avoid buildup, corrosion, and other damage to your pool during the winter months. The recommended pool levels are as follows:

  • pH between 7.2 and 7.6.
  • Alkalinity between 100 and 15 ppm.
  • Calcium hardness between 175 and 250 ppm.
  • Chlorine between 1 and 3 ppm.

Having a winterizing chemical kit makes balancing and treating your pool for the end of the season really quick and easy. At LinerWorld, we see most pool owners add these to their carts when they are shopping our winter pool covers

4. Pool vacuum or robotic pool cleaner

Chances are, you’ve been using your pool vacuum cleaner or robotic pool cleaner all summer to keep your pool clean and sanitary, but you’ll want to pull it out for one final cleaning before storing it for the winter. You’ll also want to pull out your scrub brushes and make sure your pool is as clean as possible before you wrap up the summer pool season. Otherwise, you could be in for some nasty surprises and a lot of maintenance when it’s time to open your pool.

5. Equipment instruction manuals

The end of the season is a good time to pull out all your instruction manuals and guides for your pool pumps, pool filters, and other pool accessories. Even if you’re a long-time pool owner, a little refresher on how to properly operate, winterize, and maintain these pool parts and accessories is always a good thing. Every product is different, so it’s always good to double-check and get yourself organized and ready to start fresh again in the spring.
