Patching a vinyl pool liner can extend the life of a swimming pool liner, postponing additional costs for swimming pool supplies.  The rule of the thumb is: If a vinyl pool liner has a leak, you have to repair the leak, or replace the swimming pool liner.  Sometimes finding a leak in a pool takes a lot of time. So it is necessary to determine if you would like to take the time and make the swimming pool repairs, or just replace the vinyl pool liner.

The age of the liner usually determines whether or not you should put a patch on the liner or replace it altogether.  If the pool liner is less than three years old, then it is recommended to find and fix the leak in most cases.  After three years, it depends on the condition of the vinyl and whether or not the liner is on its last leg.  There are definitely exceptions to the rules.  It is not that uncommon for a successful swimming pool repair and patch to yield five additional years on a ten year old liner.  Just as well, a successful patch on a two year old pool liner may only yield an additional 6 months to its lifespan.
