Green algae is a common form of algae in swimming pools and will usually appear right away following a turbid condition in the water from a lack of good filtration and sanitation (low chlorine levels). It’s typically found free floating in the water and stuck to the swimming pool walls and steps. It diminishes water clarity and will produce a clear, green color to the water.

Make sure you clean any leaves, sticks, etc. out of the pool as soon as possible, backwash or clean your pool filters, and use a high quality shock to kill the bloom. Brush the pool and run the equipment until the green is gone.

It is a good idea to consult a swimming pool professional in your area to determine if this might be the best course of action. If the green persists, you may have to superchlorinate the pool in order to get it all cleared up.

After the green algae is gone, use a flocculent or clarifier to remove the dead algae and clarify the water. Clean the pool filter or backwash again to make sure the dead bacteria and fungus are removed.
